Abigail King Kaiser is from Cincinnati, Ohio and went to college at Miami University of Ohio. She attended the Institute for Civic Leadership at Mills College in Oakland, and while there explored PSR and the GTU. Following a year as an ecumenical campus minister at Miami University, she decided on seminary and explored a long list of schools in her Presbyterian denomination.
“But when I visited PSR I felt a really strong connection to this community. When I was on campus and talking to students and visiting classes, it really felt like a place that was exploring the kinds of issues I was exploring in my life; it seemed to have the kind of people I wanted to get to know and the kind of community I could really grow in and learn from. So, even though it’s not affiliated with my denomination, it just seemed like the best fit, and having access to the GTU also helps.
“I think one of the things that’s been most valuable for me at PSR is the student community. PSR is a graduate school, but in some ways it’s different from typical graduate school in that more of us are living on campus. It’s a living-learning community. In class, ‘Introduction to the Bible’ gave me a whole new appreciation for the text and the scriptures — where they’ve come from, what they’ve gone through — and reading other people’s interpretations gave me the power to have my own interpretation and to challenge and question the text. That was really a powerful experience.”
