Interim President Bernard Schlager Op-Ed Published In San Francisco Chronicle

June 18, 2014

Published on Sunday, June 15, 2014, Interim President Bernard Schlager's San Francsico Chronicle Op-Ed, "Will S.F. archbishop promote hatred or reconciliation?" is a bold call to justice:

"Catholics and other people of faith cheered the recent words of Pope Francis: "If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?" To many, those words signaled a more compassionate tone from the church, one that is rooted in the Gospel call to love and affirms the human dignity of all people.

Pope Francis' words also echo the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that lesbian and gay people "must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.

Unfortunately, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is choosing not to heed these words."
