The Rev. Dr. James Alexander Forbes, Jr. is Senior Minister Emeritus of the Riverside Church and president of the Healing of the Nations Foundation. Before being called to Riverside’s pulpit, Forbes spent 15 years as a professor of preaching at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Forbes completed his pastorate at Riverside after 18 years of service to begin a national and global ministry for spiritual renewal and holistic health.
On October 17, 2013, Rev. Dr. James Forbes presented, "Offering a Prophetic Voice" at the Pacific School of Religion and Bread for the World Lecture.
Named by Newsweek as one of the twelve “most effective preachers” in the English-speaking world and by Ebony as one of America’s greatest Black preachers, Forbes is known as the preacher’s preacher.
Forbes shared his insights about prophetic pastoral ministry and homiletics, as well as his experience with a prophetic call to advocacy from the pulpit.
This event was co-sponsored by Pacific School of Religion and Bread for the World, a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. God’s grace in Jesus Christ moves us to help our neighbors, whether they live in the next house, the next state, or the next continent. By changing policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities where we live.
