ONLINE COURSE: EROS, EUCHARIST and SOCIAL CHANGE
Love is a many splendored thing |All you need is love | Love means never having to say you’re sorry | What’s love got to do with it?
These cultural markers extol the varied glories of love. Christian proclamation ostensibly does likewise as the Johannine writer claims, simply and profoundly, that “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16).
But does the definition of love remain the same in each cultural case and also when compared with the biblical writer? Or, more pointedly, does eroticism play any role in any of these exultations of love?
If “God is love” is God also “Eros”? How does erotic desire inform and shape Christian meanings of love? Do contemporary notions of eroticism make a difference in reading biblical texts and historical Christian traditions?
What is love? What is the erotic? What difference would these questions make in Christian witness to the Gospel, Congregational leadership, and shared efforts in social transformation?
